Featuring an incredible 760 acres, Point Defiance Park is a destination for locals and out-of-towners alike! It’s so much more than “just” a park, too—this dynamic attraction is home to a myriad of things to do and see. Want to go to the beach? Go boating? Grab a bite to eat? Slow down and appreciate a beautiful garden? All of that and more is wrapped up into one incredible package at Point Defiance!

“Point Defiance is a gorgeous park that is accessible to all residents of the surrounding neighborhood and all members of the Tacoma community,” shares Austin Wagner. “Metro Parks has made an effort to allow any and all to enjoy beautiful Tacoma through our parks, no matter their financial means.”

Below, Austin has chosen a few of the park’s offerings to shine the spotlight on:

1. Educational opportunities at Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium and Fort Nisqually

The zoo is packed with amazing opportunities to explore wildlife, and their kids programs are especially amazing! The same is true for Fort Nisqually—this living history museum provides an excellent way to learn about our region’s history.

2. Owen Beach

The perfect spot for beachcombing or enjoying a picnic, Owen Beach offers a lovely way to spend a sunny afternoon! (Austin notes that while you can bring dogs here, they do need to stay on the leash.)

3. Japanese Garden

Point Defiance features several different types of gardens, but the Japanese Garden is a truly unique sight to behold. This haven showcases exquisite plants, a tea house, a picturesque bridge, and more. (Bring your camera!)

4. Point Defiance Marina

Need to launch your boat? Want to go fishing? Head to the Point Defiance Marina for everything you need. Click here to learn more about services, rentals, classes, and fishing.

5. Anthony’s at Point Defiance

Right next to the Vashon ferry terminal, Anthony’s offers some of the best waterfront dining in town! Enjoy delicious food while taking in stunning views, and if it’s warm enough, take advantage of the outdoor dining.

6. Five Mile Drive & Trails

There are many ways to explore the park, and one of the most popular ways is by exploring the various trails that run through the 760 acres. Click here to see a complete list of trail lengths and a handy map.
