What You Need to Know About Side Sewers and Buying a Home in Tacoma

Did you know that in Tacoma home owners are responsible for repair and maintenance of their private side sewer? Buildings constructed prior to 1980 are likely to have side sewers made of clay or concrete pipes. These can crack, shift out of place, and/or be subject to intrusion by roots, causing leak age or blockage in the pipe.

Standard home owners insurance does not cover your side sewer. You can ask your insurer to add coverage on to your existing policy, however. The additional cost runs between $25 and $50 annually. This is not a huge expense and worth every penny when you compare it to the cost of sewer line repair. When a side sewer does back up the cost to repair is usually around $5,000-$15,000.

Protect your investment by having a sewer scope done before you purchase a property, the cost is only around $200. While some sewer repair companies offer the scope at no cost, we recommend consulting someone to do your sewer scope that only assesses condition and does no repairs. Also, remember to consider purchasing the additional insurance coverage for your side sewer.
