“What a Year!” 2019 Community Service Day

Last updated February 6, 2020

For the past 35 years, Windermere has taken a day to close all offices in the name of making positive changes through local service projects. Community Service Day was born with the intention to allow Windermere REALTORS®. managers, owners, and staff the ability to serve the community where our business takes place every day, in the form of volunteerism. We pause business to work alongside some of the greatest features Pierce County has to offer its residents. Four offices divided the work on three project sites: the Boys and Girls Club of South Puget Sound in Tacoma, Mother Earth Farm in Puyallup, and Key Peninsula Community Services in Gig Harbor. A day like this sparks gratitude and reflection for the remarkable resources that have been created to uplift and support the need that members of our diverse county have.

The Boys and Girls Club of South Puget Sound offers safe, inclusive, and inspiring spaces that children and families rely on every day. Children from all over Tacoma have a designated space to have fun, get a hot meal, receive help with homework, and socialize with their friends. During the time there one group completely scrubbed, painted, and organized the ‘Brain Room.’ This room that has multi-media tools and art supplies that previously wasn’t utilized to the fullest potential because of the work that needed to get it running! Within that same day, another group top-to-bottom organized and took stock of the recreational gym materials- making it easier to coordinate activities and know what all they had in stock. The most inspiring sentiment that remained was the amount of effort that goes into protecting these resources for children who need them. Overall cost for families are kept low purposefully with a sliding scale and grant money funds $0.88 of every $1 spent. This club has an astonishing commitment to making spaces like this accessible for everyone who wants or needs them.

Key Peninsula Community Services is a source that connects members to food and services that achieve wellness and foster resilience. KPCS is a Food Bank and Senior Center, operating is made possible by volunteers, donations, and community minded partners and sponsors. Our group in the Harbor re-striped the parking lot, painted benches, planted flowers while topping up the beds with fresh bark, and cleaned wherever it was needed!

Mother Earth Farm, a vital component of the Emergency Food Network, is an 8-acre farm that annually donates more than 100,000 pounds of fruits, vegetables, and herbs for Pierce County food pantries and meal sites. The team that congregated at Mother Earth helped weed the areas in and around the farm, getting their hands deep in the dirt so the end product was easily harvested and shipped out- food from the farm is generally provided to neighbors in need within 24-hours of harvest- efficiency is key! A supervisor of the project told the volunteers that the area they helped maintain would annually produce about 20,000 pounds of fresh, organic food. The Emergency Food Network is able to produce $12 worth of food for the cost of $1; commitment, time, and care goes into making everything stretch as far as possible to help the greatest number of people and families in need.

We were extremely proud to be a part of the Windermere Community Service Day legacy again in 2019. Our next upcoming Windermere Professional Partners philanthropy event is sure to be a memorable one also. Please consider joining us on Tuesday, August 20th at Skansie Brothers Park in Gig Harbor for a night of live music and quality time with friends and family. All funds from this event will go to Raising Girls, founded in 2017 with a mission to provide South Sound girls with care bags of personal items that testify to the joy of "girlhood" and shows the care and respect their community feels for them. For more information on this event, please email [email protected].

Lastly, we would like to share with you our 2019 Windermere Foundation, WPP Partners. This year we are raising funds through the Windermere Foundation for New Pheobe House and Hilltop Artists. These organizations were selected by our Broker Advisory Board and represent a few of the local organzitions doing meaningful work in Pierce County. Thank you to our clients for allowing us to contrinute!
