Big Brothers Big Sisters of America: Making a BIG Impact in Our Community

Big Brothers Big Sisters of America is helping to improve the lives of children all over our country, and it’s one of REALTOR® Taelor Trowbridge’s favorite local organizations.

“This program is one of the most influential hands-on programs that our community has to offer,” shares Taelor. “The lifelong relationships that are made through this program are incredible. Being a Big Sister or Big Brother to someone in need is one of the most rewarding feelings in the world.”

Big Brothers Big Sisters has their own Puget Sound chapter, and they’re out there doing excellent work in our community. The BBBS website sums up their mission and model well:

"As the nation’s largest donor and volunteer supported mentoring network, Big Brothers Big Sisters makes meaningful, monitored matches between adult volunteers (“Bigs”) and children (“Littles”), ages 6 through 18, in communities across the country. We develop positive relationships that have a direct and lasting effect on the lives of young people."

The “Bigs” work to help children develop dreams and aspirations, develop greater confidence, and also work on creating better relationships. Part of this includes learning to avoid risky behaviors, and also working on succeeding in school. And it works! According to BBBS.org, “Littles” involved in the program are “46% less likely to begin using illegal drugs, 27% less likely to begin using alcohol, 52% less likely to skip school.” That is some excellent progress, and we’re lucky to have people in our community who are working to help our youth succeed and have better lives!
